Foreign ministers from the US, China, UK, Russia, Germany, and France agreed today to postpone a vote on sanctioning Iran for its nuclear program until at least the end of November. The date depends on reports from the UN nuclear watchdog and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solano, whom the Security Council asked to hold further talks with Tehran, Reuters reports.

The agreement was a disappointment to the US and France, because both urged swifter responses to Iran's refusal to halt uranium enrichment; Russia and China in particular opposed hasty economic sanctions. Germany, Iran's biggest trading partner, insisted that sanctions be within the UN framework and eschewed military intervention. Iran's foreign minister called economic sanctions "ineffective."
