Some TV actors seem to play the same character over and over again. (Kelsey Grammer, anyone?) Others have managed to escape that fate. From geeky dad to criminal, the 5 who have stepped outside the box best:

  1. Bryan Cranston: Once known as the goofy dad from Malcolm in the Middle, he now plays a crystal meth chef in Breaking Bad.

  1. Edie Falco: From married to the mob in Sopranos to the gritty, but less gun-tastic Nurse Jackie.
  2. Ray Romano: Went from relatively great hubby on Everybody Loves Raymond to gambling addict separated from his wife on Men of a Certain Age.
  3. Julianna Margulies: Spent years as an ER nurse, then changed careers, hopping aboard legal drama The Good Wife.
  4. David Duchovny: Though it seemed like he would forever be Mulder on the X-Files, he's traded aliens for women on Californication.
