The stand-off between anti-government Thai demonstrators and counter-demonstrators backed by troops in the heart of Bangkok turned bloody last night as grenade attacks killed 3 people and wounded at least 87. The grenades were launched from close to where Red Shirt anti-government protesters are entrenched, and struck an area where counter-protesters have gathered, reports CNN.

A Red Shirt leader denied the group was behind the attack. The military—which has been authorized to use live ammunition against the protesters—has warned the Red Shirts their time is running out and ordered them to abandon their protest sites, which have been barricaded with tires and razor wire. In the northeast of Thailand, anti-government protesters released a troop train they had blocked after receiving assurances that it wasn't bringing reinforcements to Bangkok.
