George Huguely's defense lawyer professed his client's innocence today, saying the University of Virginia men's lacrosse player hadn't meant to kill his girlfriend, women's lacrosse player Yeardley Love. “We are confident that Ms. Love's death was not intended, but an accident with a tragic outcome,” the lawyer told the press outside court this morning. He was there for a bond hearing that wound up being delayed.
The lawyer added that Huguely would be withdrawing from school; he was set to graduate this month. Huguely appeared at the hearing only by video, staring into the camera in a gray-and-black prison uniform and saying nothing except one brief, “thank you, your honor,” reports the Washington Post. His family was in the courtroom but made no statement. (More George Huguely stories.)
