Marking the latest low in British-Russian relations, the head of Russian intelligence claims to have uncovered evidence of a plot by Britain to "dismember" his country. The charge, in an interview with a Russian journal, raised fears of a new wave of expulsions of British diplomats, reports the Telegraph.
"They have claimed credit for the collapse of the Soviet Union and are now hatching plans aimed at dismembering Russia," said Nikolai Patrushev, head of the FSB intelligence agency. A British embassy spokesman in Moscow denied the charges. "We don't interfere in internal politics," he said. The tirade is seen as a part of a tactic to build public support for President Vladimir Putin.
