The Daily Show is a “progressive darling” and almost universally beloved, but it’s no different from other late night television in one way: It’s an all-boys' club. On Jezebel, Irin Carmon talks to a host of former female correspondents and writers, most of whom agree finding their way into a coveted Daily Show spot was hard—and staying in it was even harder. If Olivia Munn survives her “tryout,” she’ll be the show’s first new female correspondent in seven years.

Munn—a frequent Maxim model as well as Attack of the Show! co-host—seems to underscore one problem the producers have: Only wanting to hire beautiful women. And seemingly affable host Jon Stewart’s behind-the-scenes personality adds to the unwelcoming atmosphere: “There's a huge discrepancy between the Jon Stewart who goes on TV every night and the Jon Stewart who runs the Daily Show with joyless rage,” says one former executive.
