SarahPAC, the esteemed hockey mom’s Political Action Committee, is shaping itself into the kind of sophisticated operation a presidential candidate might use, according to Politico. The PAC just had its best fundraising quarter ever, raking in $866,000. It turned around and spent $742,000 of that investing in its infrastructure, building its lists and fundraising capabilities, and launching its first direct mail campaign. Most of the money came from small donors.
Alleged 2012 hopefuls Tim Pawlenty, Haley Barbour, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee all have PACs as well. But until now, Palin has eschewed traditional political expenditures, relying on Facebook, Twitter, speeches, and email. “We didn't have a big base of people coming out of the presidential campaign," says the group's treasurer. "All that stuff was property of the McCain campaign. But now, I think we’ve got a pretty formidable thing going on." (More SarahPAC stories.)
