Tata Consultancy Service has won a $1.2 billion contract with Neilsen, marking a historical record for an Indian company. TCS will provide the Dutch media powerhouse  with 10 years of infrastructure and financial management, BusinessWeek reports. The deal puts the company on the global finance map, able to compete with outsourcing bigshots like IBM and Accenture.

Indian firms have traditionally restricted themselves to contracts in the $50-200 million range, while moving towards more important deals around the globe in recent years. The Nielsen contract continues that trend, and also helps reduce Tata's currency risks by diversifying its income internationally. "This gives India much greater credibility," said a TCS capo about today's deal. (More India stories.)
