Gallup puts GOP 10 points ahead in generic ballot

Things have never looked worse for the Democrats heading into midterm elections, according to the latest Gallup poll. The "generic ballot" test—which asks whether voters would prefer a Republican or Democratic congressional candidate—put the GOP ahead by 10%, the highest margin since Gallup started asking the question in 1942. Some 51% said they'd prefer the Republican, while 41% favored the Democrat and 10% were undecided.

Some strategists say the Democrats still have time to turn things around, but a growing number believe the House may already be lost. "You have millions of Americans worried about the economy, jobs, deficits, their children's future, and we're out there talking about what—Bush, Iraq?" a Democratic strategist tells Politico. "Our message needs to be more positive, more hopeful, more focused, and we need talk to the economic reality of everyday Americans and their families.
