It's either the savviest marketing ever or a genuine hit: The Dallas Morning News catches up with what it calls the "cultlike following" among adherents of the smoker/grill called the Big Green Egg. "It looks like an alien spaceship; it comes in one color—forest green; it's insanely heavy; and it's not cheap," with a starter package at $900, writes Tina Danze. And yet, devotees swear by it and their Egghead community, which exists both online and in person at mass grilling get-togethers.
"Without question, there's a cult following for the Egg," says one Dallas businessman. It's also seen as a "macho" grill. Open it incorrectly, and "it will ignite in a blue ball of flames and singe your eyebrows and mustache," says one fan who happens to be a nationally ranked outdoor griller. "You only do that once, and you learn."
