Packers Great Max McGee Dies

Max McGee, the Green Bay Packer legend who scored the first touchdown in Super Bowl history, died yesterday after falling from the roof of his Minnesota home. McGee played 12 seasons with the Cheeseheads and served two years in the Air Force, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel says. The Nevada native remains the tenth-highest scorer in NFL history with 306 points on 51 touchdowns.

“He was the most uncomplicated athlete I ever covered,” one sports writer said. McGee is also remembered for his off-field antics: The night before Super Bowl I, he sneaked out after curfew, thinking he wouldn’t play. But the next day, after catching just an hour’s sleep, he played to great acclaim. McGee, who was a popular color commentator on the team's radio broadcasts and co-founded Chi Chi’s, was 75.
