With his Senate seat at risk in a close battle with Sharron Angle, Harry Reid is taking flak for telling MSNBC that he was key to preventing a worldwide depression. “People have been hurting. And it doesn’t give them comfort or solace for me to tell them, you know, but for me, we’d be in a worldwide depression,” said Reid.
A Nevada GOP leader quickly labeled his comment “the height of ignorance or arrogance.” A Reid spokesman countered: “Most business groups and economists believe we were on the brink of a worldwide downturn that would have materialized had we not passed the stimulus”—which, Steve Tetreault notes in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Reid “maneuvered to passage” as Senate majority leader. Arrogance? Accuracy? For context, check out the video at left.
