NFL owners apparently think they are unique creatures in the annals of business, writes Sally Jenkins in the Washington Post. "They believe they are entitled to make money every year, even in the midst of disastrous recessions." That's essentially what's going on in the labor dispute that looks likely to disrupt next year's season. Oh, and that money? It's actually "your money," or it was until the owners collected it in myriad ways, from exorbitant tickets to those "deplorable 'seat licenses," to tax breaks for new stadiums.
"In what other industry do business owners act so entitled to make money every year into the limitless future?" wonders Jenkins. The dispute comes down to whether owners or players are entitled to more of that pool of cash shelled out by fans. Gee, that's a tough call. "After all, they don't pay to see (Redskins owner Dan) Snyder smoke a cigar, or consult with media advisers." (More NFL stories.)
