An international economic group has named the best region on the planet to live, and it's one whose reputation hasn't always been sterling, the BBC reports: Canberra, Australia. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, which has 34 member countries, calls the Australian Capital Territory the best in the world, though Australia's own Herald Sun says it's "more like capital punishment." Still, the top country overall is also Australia. The Regional Well-Being report is based on factors like local income, environment, and safety, the BBC notes. Among its other winners and losers:

  • Among countries, Norway comes in second, while Canada, Sweden, and the US round out the top five, the Daily Mail reports.
  • All 10 of the lowest-ranked regions are Mexican states, while the countries at the bottom of the list are Mexico, Turkey, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia.
  • Data from the study puts New Hampshire as the US state with the highest quality of life, followed by Minnesota, Vermont, Iowa, and North Dakota, 24/7 Wall St. reports.
