The survivor of the shooting that left two journalists dead Wednesday in Virginia evaded multiple bullets before curling into a ball and being shot in the back, her husband tells ABC News today. Vicki Gardner, executive director of the local chamber of commerce, came out of a medically induced coma yesterday, and her husband Tim shared her recollections of the shooting with ABC. He said Gardner, who was being interviewed live, was unable to see the shooter coming because the lights from the camera were in her eyes. She told her husband the shooter, identified as Vester Flanagan, went after WDBJ reporter Alison Parker first before shooting cameraman Adam Ward. "Then he shot three times at my wife," Tim Gardner tells ABC. "She was trying to dodge everything."
"He missed twice, and then she dove to the ground and curled up in a ball, and that’s when he shot her in the back," Tim Gardner continues. A surgeon says Vicki Gardner, who was able to walk to the ambulance following the shooting, would be paralyzed or dead if the bullet had struck a few centimeters away, according to her husband's interview with ABC. Troy Keaton, Gardner's boss, tells the AP her first concern upon waking up yesterday was for the families of Ward and Parker. He says she sent them her condolences. "She's a little torn up about things at the moment," Tim Gardner tells ABC. Gardner had a kidney and part of her colon removed but is expected to recover. A real estate agent with an office in the shopping center where the shooting took place describes Gardner as the face of the community, the AP notes. (More shooting stories.)
