Alaska's Frigid Rep Just Got Ridiculous

Check out the forecast in Fairbanks, Alaska, for the next few days and you'll see a lot of minus signs. The northernmost state has been slammed with way-below-freezing weather more than a month before winter officially starts, and it could be dangerous if residents aren't careful. "With these sorts of temperatures, people are at risk of frostbite within a minute of stepping outside, if not less time than that," Weather Channel meteorologist Kevin Roth tells NBC News. "With this kind of cold, you walk outside and it really takes your breath away if you're not used to it."

To give you an idea of what they mean by "this kind of cold," the mercury has dipped as low as minus 24 degrees, per NBC. And relative relief isn't coming till later in the week, either: Roth says the Last Frontier won't zoom past zero until Thursday or so. (Does Alaska have El Niño to thank?)
