Simply avoiding a vegan cafe wasn't good enough for a group of men in Tbilisi, who stormed the establishment in the Georgian capital Sunday night and pelted diners with meat. The men "entered and started to be violent," the Kiwi Cafe says in a Facebook post. "They pulled out some grilled meat, sausages, fish and started eating them and throwing them at us, and finally they started to smoke." A brawl began, but the carnivores, some of whom wore sausages around their necks, had fled by the time police arrived, the BBC reports.
It's not clear who was behind the attack, but many suspect the group was motivated by more than mere loathing of lentils, the New York Times reports. The cafe in Tbilisi's old town is known for attracting an alternative crowd, and the cafe's management says the men were neo-Nazis who had earlier asked a nearby shop about "LGBT, foreigners, punks" in the cafe. "The Kiwi Cafe attracts hipsters, gays, people who are different, and they symbolize liberal Western values," says the regional director of Human Rights Watch. (The owners of a string of vegan restaurants in California received death threats after they started eating meat.)
