A Florida man visiting New York City for a wedding was fatally punched by a stranger after knocking on the window of the wrong vehicle, police say. Family members believe Boca Raton resident Sandor Szabo ordered an Uber from the hotel his brother was staying in in Queens to his own hotel in Long Island City around 1am Sunday, the Miami Herald reports. After his cellphone's battery died, Szabo apparently banged on the window of a parked SUV, believing it was his ride. Police say the angry driver emerged and punched Szabo, who fell backward and hit his head on the sidewalk, the New York Daily News reports.
Szabo, who had attended his stepsister's wedding earlier that night, never regained consciousness after the punch. The 35-year-old died Tuesday night after he was taken off life support. Police have released surveillance video of the driver, who sped off and is still at large. Colleagues at What If Holdings, the marketing firm Szabo worked for, say they're devastated by the death of a beloved colleague, CBS12 reports. "I hope they find him and bring him to justice," CEO Josh Gillon says of the SUV driver. "This was really a stupid, stupid act. It's a big family, and he was an important part of it so everybody is just heartbroken." (Police in Denver arrested an Uber driver in June for shooting a passenger.)
