The final morning of President Trump's visit to Japan was overshadowed by a horrific attack on schoolchildren near Tokyo. The president offered his condolences during a Tuesday morning appearance with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the AP reports. "I want to take a moment to send our prayers and sympathy to the victims of the stabbing attack this morning in Tokyo," the president said. "All Americans stand with the people of Japan and grieve for the victims and their families." Abe said he was outraged by the attack, in which at least three people were killed, including the knife-wielding attacker, and 16 injured. "It was an extremely harrowing incident in which many small children were victimized, and I feel strong resentment," he said.
Police say an 11-year-old girl and 39-year-old foreign ministry official Satoshi Oyama, believed to be the father of another child, were killed in the attack, the BBC reports. Police have not released the name of the suspect, a man in his 50s who stabbed himself in the neck after attacking a group of schoolgirls waiting for a bus in Kawasaki. Witnesses say the man shouted "I will kill you!" as he stabbed the children. The driver of the bus told NHK that the man stabbed the children in the queue before boarding the bus and attacking more students inside. The injured people include 13 girls between the ages of six and 12, the Guardian reports. Police have not disclosed a possible motive for the attack. (More Japan stories.)
