Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz is in stable condition after a shooting in the Dominican Republic on Sunday night, police say. Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte says the 43-year-old slugger was shot in the back from behind at near point-blank range at a nightclub in Santo Domingo, CBS reports. The attacker, who ambushed Ortiz after getting off a motorcycle, was captured and beaten by bar patrons, Bautista says. Ortiz "is out of surgery and stable; he is resting,'' father Leo Ortiz says. "Big Papi will be around for a long time." He says the bullet didn't hit any major organs. The father says he has no idea why anybody would want to shoot his son.
Local reporter Dionisio Soldevila tells ESPN that Ortiz told doctors: "Please don't let me die. I'm a good man." Ortiz, who is from the Dominican Republic and spends part of the year there, won three World Series in his 14 seasons with the Red Sox. He retired in 2016. Bautista says investigators are trying to determine whether Ortiz was the intended target. TV host Jhoel Lopez, who was with Ortiz, was also injured in the shooting, possibly by the same bullet. Police have not identified a third person wounded in the incident. In a statement, the Red Sox said they had "offered David's family all available resources to aid in his recovery and will continue to keep them in our hearts." (More David Ortiz stories.)
