DA: FedEx Worker Killed Instructor After Missing Promotion
Keith Lamont Blount.   (Delaware County District Attorney)

A Philadelphia man who was denied a promotion at FedEx "decided to retaliate in the worst way possible," prosecutors say. Keith Lamont Blount, 59, is accused of murdering a FedEx driving instructor who made the decision not to promote him to driver, Fox reports. Prosecutors say Blount ambushed and killed 51-year-old Bartholomew Masciulli in the Cargo City area of the Philadelphia International Airport on Oct. 7, more than a month after Masciulli evaluated Blount and did not approve him as a company driver.

Witnesses said they saw Blount waiting in a parking lot, which they considered odd because he was usually at another facility, the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. According to an affidavit, witnesses said they saw Blount speak with Masciulli briefly before he fired five shots into the man's vehicle. Hours later, Blount fired on police officers in Philadelphia and was injured when they returned fire, authorities say. Blount is being held without bail on charges including murder in the first degree, aggravated assault, and gun crimes. According to court records, he was not allowed to possess a gun because of previous felony convictions for robbery and assault.

Masciulli was a father of three and family friends say he had been caring for his wife while she was on disability, the Inquirer reports. "Every homicide is a tragedy, but it is particularly shocking when this level of violence occurs in a place that we want to believe is safe—our workplaces, our schools, our houses of worship," District Attorney Jack Stollsteimer said in a statement. "The victim in this case had been an employee of FedEx for 28 years, and he had been assigned to evaluate the readiness of a fellow employee to become a driver for FedEx. When the defendant did not receive a positive evaluation, he decided to retaliate in the worst way possible." (More Philadelphia stories.)
