Budget Bubbles for New Year's
"Seeing out a year filled with mostly grim headlines and ushering in a new one that threatens more of the same doesn't exactly put one in the mood for Champagne," Mike Steinberger writes in Slate.   (Shutter Stock)

Champagne may feel like a vestige of a world without a credit crisis, but there's no need to go without bubbly on New Year's Eve. Slate offers some moderately priced options:

  • Cava is Spain's answer to champagne, made by the same method. A thrifty seeker of festive spirits can pick up a bottle of Cristilano Cava Brut and get change from $10.

  • Italian prosecco is quicker and cheaper to make than champagne. Unpretentious bubblies like Nino Franco Prosecco di Valdobbiadene Brut NV deliver simple pleasure in abundance.
  • It isn't just the Champagne region that produces French sparkling wines: varieties like Burgundy's Louis Buillout Crement de Bourgogne Perle de Vin make for good—and cheap—drinking.
  • Why not buy American? Perennial Californian favorite Roederer Estate Anderson Valley Brut NV sits at the brawnier end of the scale but has few rivals for the quality and price.
