President Obama said today proposed budget cuts are “not a criticism of” federal workers. Still, they take a toll, from defense to education. The Washington Post takes a look at what’s being trimmed:
- Anthrax vaccine research: The administration says the goals of the program have been met, and its cancellation will save $8 million.
- Cotton storage: The government will save $570 million in payments to growers waiting for higher prices.
- Even Start: A troubled education program that funds local literacy programs. Savings: $66 million in 2010.
- The F-22: The administration is satisfied with the 187 fighter aircraft on order, but whether influential proponents will let the program die is another question.
- Yucca Mountain: The nuclear waste repository program in Nevada will be shut down, and $196.8 million provided to pursue other options.
- No more contractors: The Pentagon will reduce its employment of civilian contractors to pre-2001 levels, saving $900 million by 2015.
