Gunmen raised political tensions in Iran today by shooting up a campaign office in Zahedan, the town where a mosque bombing left 23 dead yesterday, the Los Angeles Times reports. Tehran officials accused Washington of supporting the gunmen, who injured up to three people in the office of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. A Sunni militant group, meanwhile, claimed responsibility for the mosque attack.

Calling a United Arab Emirates news channel, the group, Jundallah, claimed it was targeting a political meeting of pro-government militiamen at the mosque. Authorities say they have collared three bombing suspects who sneaked into Iran to ignite regional hatred before the June 12 elections. "This group aimed to create religious disputes, intimidate people and undermine elections in the country by their futile action," one official said. (More Iran stories.)
