President Obama arrived in Copenhagen this morning for the final day of the UN climate change conference as diplomats scrambled to salvage an agreement from the talks. A political agreement drawn up overnight by a group of countries was rejected this morning. The clashes between Western and developing nations that have overshadowed the two-week summit are still unresolved, say frustrated participants. French President Nicolas Sarkozy declared after meeting with Obama this morning that China was holding up progress in negotiations.
It's unclear exactly how Obama will be spending his time at the summit today, AP notes. Many in Copenhagen hope the president will be able to push the talks past the finish line, although White House advisers admit failure is a definite possibility. "Only the heads of state can bring this summit to a successful conclusion," the director of the UN Environment Program tells the BBC. "They are the only hope we have, but the summit as of this morning is a summit in crisis."
