Schumer: Campaign Ruling 'Undermines Democracy'

Democrats and campaign reformers alike are railing against today’s Supreme Court decision allowing corporations to use their money how they please in the political arena. “This decision allows Wall Street to tap its vast corporate profits to drown out the voice of the public in our democracy,” Common Cause President Bob Edgar says. “It’s made a bad situation worse.”

Dems also were unhappy with the decision, the Los Angeles Times notes, not least because most of the freed-up corporate money will likely go to GOP candidates. New York Senator Chuck Schumer was particularly vehement, calling the ruling “one of the three or four decisions in the history of the Supreme Court that most undermines democracy.” The court, he added, “has just determined the winners of next term’s elections.
