A moment of silence was held at the University of Virginia's commencement ceremonies and slain women's lacrosse player Yeardley Love was given a posthumous degree. Love was awarded a bachelor's degree in politics and government today in a diploma ceremony held by the Department of Politics. Love's cousin, Lawren McChesney, walked up to accept the diploma.
White ribbons seeking to raise awareness of violence against women dotted the crowd, notes the Washington Post, and a scholarship in Love's memory has topped $350,000. Love's accused murderer, George Huguely, has withdrawn from the university and is currently jailed. His fellow lacrosse teammates were unable to attend commencement because they were competing.
